Excellence in Healthcare, Geriatric Medicine – Mike Shaw, PA-C

Excellence in Healthcare, Geriatric Medicine – Mike Shaw, PA-C

Date Honored: June 2021

Wichita Business Journal | June 2021 | Excellence in Healthcare | Category: Geriatric Medicine

How did you choose a career in geriatric care? I was interested in geriatric medicine because I felt there were things that we could accomplish to help slow the rate of aging and loss of functionality, to allow individuals to maintain independence and freedom from disease. Traditional medicine can often approach geriatric care by managing symptoms and disease that is assumed to be a given result of aging. The approach we have at the Riordan Clinic is to address the aging process earlier, identify root causes of disease, maintain wellness, empower health, and create optimal aging. Quality of life is just as important as longevity of life.

What is your greatest professional achievement? The greatest achievement in my career is the realization that aging is more than a reactive approach of the natural progression of pathology-driven disease management. Instead, I focus on a proactive, causation-based approach of slowing the progression of biological aging in the body.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your career? Major insurers aren’t primed to cover proactive and preventive care. This creates an obstacle to care until someone gets to the point of having a diagnosis or disease, rather than correcting that course early in the process and helping them avoid that path altogether.

What is the best advice you would give to someone considering a career in geriatric care? I would tell them to step back and evaluate the patient, not with a reactive pathology approach, but from a proactive causation perspective.

Are you involved in the community? As a not-for-profit organization, the Riordan Clinic has a robust education program. I contribute as an author, speaker, podcast guest, and teacher for professionals shadowing at and learning from the clinic. I also work with the Wichita Police and Fire Departments to help provide annual physicals for their employees.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Walking, biking, gardening, and spending time with my children and grandchildren.

How has the pandemic affected your job? Thankfully, it has minimal impact. We are in an environment where we have been able to continue seeing patients and providing quality health care services.

Excellence in Healthcare, Geriatric Medicine – Ron Hunninghake, MD

Excellence in Healthcare, Geriatric Medicine – Ron Hunninghake, MD

Date Honored: June 2020

Wichita Business Journal | June 2020| Excellence in Healthcare | Category: Geriatric Medicine

Why did you choose a career in health care? I wanted to learn more about real health, optimal health.

What is your greatest professional achievement? Learning how to work with and treat patients as co-learners in their struggle to overcome complex chronic illness. Co-learner is a term that Dr. Riordan coined years ago. It embodies the principle that both the patient and the doctor are together in this journey to better understanding. I want my patients to be educated and well-informed about their health and treatment plan. This is what leads to lasting success.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your career? Learning how to cope with deep-rooted institutional bias in the science and practice of medicine.

What was the best career decision you ever made? Deciding to join Dr. Hugh Riordan in 1989 at what was once called The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning — now known as the Riordan Clinic.

Who was your most important mentor? Several: Dr. Hugh Riordan; Dr. Raymond Schmidt; Dr. Thomas Levy.

What is the best advice they gave you? Focus on working with patients to detect and correct the actual root causes of their illnesses from BOTH the conventional and functional perspective.

What is the best advice you would give to someone considering a career in health care? Know that achieving a solid career in medicine is quite difficult and expensive these days — but worthwhile if you know where your true motivation lies!

Are you involved in the community? I give presentations on health and wellness at various organizations.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I love to read detective novels and to read widely to enlarge my understanding of microbiology and nutritional biochemistry.

How has the pandemic impacted your job? Actually, very little, thankfully. I’m as busy as ever.

Healthcare Heroes 2017 – Ron Hunninghake, MD

Healthcare Heroes 2017 – Ron Hunninghake, MD

Date Honored: August 2017

Wichita Business Journal | August 2017 | Healthcare Heroes | Category: Physicians

Dr. Ron Hunninghake is nearing 30 years with the Riordan Clinic in Wichita, helping patients increase their wellness through the nutrition-based care pioneered by founder Dr. Hugh Riordan. With nearly three decades of improving lives at the clinic, it’s no surprise that Hunninghake is known by patients and staff alike by the more familiar name of “Dr. Ron.”

Hunninghake is a native Kansan who began his career as a small-town doctor north of Salina in the town of Minneapolis. He joined Riordan in 1989, and has been the clinic’s medical director ever since. It is work that has taken him around the globe, having lectured on Riordan specialties such as vitamin therapy for cancer patients in countries all over the world. It has also brought the world to Wichita.

“Dr. Ron has helped revolutionize the face of holistic medicine and the use of High Dose IV Vitamin C in the treatment of cancer and chronic disease,” says Erin Manning, marketing director at Riordan. “He has patients fly in from all over the world and is invited to speak at conferences globally. He is truly a pioneer.”

His work at the clinic has also seen him carry on the tenets of its late founder, including the focus on the patient-doctor relationship, proper diagnosis, and the power of nature to help treat the patient as a whole person. In addition, Hunninghake is the current chairman-elect of the International Schizophrenia Foundation, and sits on the board of directors for the Pure North S’Energy Foundation in Canada, and has been a regular presenter at their Orthomolecular Medicine Today Conference. He is also the co-author of three books and numerous papers on subjects including inflammation, supplements, and diabetes prevention. While his expertise may have made “Dr. Ron” known around the world, it has been the impact on patients that has made the greatest difference.

“Thousands of patients credit their health and well-being to his guidance and care,” says Anne Zauderer, a chiropractor at the clinic and Hunninghake’s daughter. “He has dedicated his life and medical career to constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of medicine for the good of his patients. He is a vital force in the Wichita medical community.”
