Integrative Medicine
What is Integrative Medicine?
An individualized approach to healing and achieving the best possible health outcomes.
The terms “complementary” and “alternative” medicine are often used interchangeably but may refer to different types of medicine for different people. Together, they are sometimes referred to by the acronym CAM. Integrative medicine, as defined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, “combines mainstream medical therapies and CAM therapies for which there is some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness.” Integrative medicine treats the whole person with a combination of functional, naturopathic, orthomolecular, and allopathic medicine practices. It is a partnership between the provider and patient to discover the root causes of illness together.
The Benefits of Integrative Medicine
- Providers and patients are seen as “co-learners” as each has an equal role in learning together in the health journey
- All factors that influence health, wellness, and disease are considered
- The root causes of illness are addressed, not just the symptoms
- Treatments or interventions are natural and less invasive whenever possible
- Excellent for chronic conditions, including cancer and autoimmune disorders
- Can be used to complement conventional treatments
- Treatment plans are individualized
