John Hunninghake, MD

Board Member

Dr. Hunninghake is a Critical Care Medicine attending at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, where he serves as the Facility’s ICU Medical Director, ECMO Co-Director, and Respiratory Therapy Medical Director. He earned his Doctorate in Medicine (M.D.) from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2013. As a recipient of the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), he completed both Internal Medicine residency and Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship as part of the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC).

He has served as a member and leader on various committees, councils, and boards through American College of Physicians (ACP), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), and Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). He proudly served as the Chair of the National ACP Council of Resident Fellow Members (CRFM), which include representation on the National ACP Board of Regents. He also served as the Air Force Chair for the Planning Committee of the Triservice ACP Chapter Meeting. After completion of his active duty service commitment in July 2024, Lt Col Hunninghake joined the Air Force Reserves with the 934th ASTS (based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota) where he contributes as an instructor in the Sustainment Training platform for Air Force Critical Care Air Transport (CCAT).

Over the course of his career, Dr. Hunninghake has been the recipient of several academic and military awards, including: Air Force ACP Chapter “Archie Hoffman” Early Career Physician-of-the-Year, GME Faculty-of-the-Year award, Squadron and Group Provider-of-the-Year awards, Roth Leadership Award for Simulation, Col. Donald Null Distinguished Graduating Fellow, Outstanding Fellow Teacher for Internal Medicine, Most Valued Resident Instructor, and Maj. John H. Gillespie Distinguished Graduating Intern. His areas of interest include: clinical skills education, simulation-based training, virtual health, and extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation.
